My downfall has been to think/overthink the projects I want to make, but never getting to them because of my perfectionistic tendencies. I am now past the 150-Day mark, and this has brought a new vigor to me in many ways. Now I am hooked on the process and look forward to each day to create something fresh and new. Happiness abounds!Jandahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11236534489586949903noreply@blogger.comBlogger154125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5285133817885523864.post-17098871586491405472011-06-27T19:35:00.000-07:002011-06-27T19:35:13.681-07:00Bee Eyes & Mouth!: Day 158<div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><u>Some</u> Of The Details Are In :-]</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br />

</span></div><div style="text-align: center;">Two days ago I was talking about the materials and supplies for this Honey Bee. I'm not sure where my brain was when I was throwing in the black sweater for the body. These bees have a yellow body with black striping, for goodness sakes! I am amending my materials list and will be using yellow for the body and black for the stripes. (Back on track in more ways than one...)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Here are my materials all in a pile.<br />
<br />
The only yellow ribbon I have is that on the spool above, and it is too narrow for what I want to use. The wide velvet ribbon in the photo is part of the black sweater that I will use for the body. I may be able to incorporate that to make the yellow bands. Time will tell. There are buttons to choose from for the eyes (my assortment that is now contained in my new <a href="http://thesweaterproject.blogspot.com/2011/06/more-button-storage-day-153.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #7f6000;">Button Jar</span></a>), and the translucent ribbon in the foreground will make a nice set of wings.<br />
<br />
Please come back tomorrow for the next phase of my project.<br />

</span></div><div style="text-align: center;">In keeping with the last 2 days of making storage jars/containers more appealing, I just wanted to share another idea I had for a Sweater Label. This is my project for today.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">A great jar with rounded square corners needs a label. You will see the entire jar shortly.<br />
I measured the jar label in order to make the pattern to cover it. </span></td></tr>

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">This time I want to embroider "Buttons" on my sweater piece, so I traced the pattern onto tracing paper and wrote the letters as I want them. This is it!</span></td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">I have cut my sweater piece and also cut out the tracing paper template for the embroidery.<br />

</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">As you recall, my camera took a day off yesterday. Now we are back on track, Camera and I, so here goes the Catching-Up-For-Lost-Time-Blog...and of course a project for today, too!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Yesterday the project was inspired by a tutorial of Martha Stewart's called</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/print/273325"> <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e69138;">Decorative Jar Lids</span></a>. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The idea is to cover containers (jam jars, etc) for your crafting supplies so they will look great and be aesthetically pleasing, being more than just a Plain Jane container. Her version calls for woven fabric.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">My version, OF COURSE, must be Felted Sweater Fabric.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">And my story of the tutorial is as follows:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">For the pattern, draw around the lid you want to cover, then allow for an additional amount to lop over the edges. I used a baby food jar for my project, but you may cover any lidded jar with this technique.<br />
I couldn't keep a photographic record of the process for you, but I took photos today of the outcome.<br />
<br />
The next step was to choose the fabric and cut it out. Pretty straightforward.</span></td></tr>

I spread the glue on the lid, then placed the lid in the center of the blue sweater circle. Before covering the edges of the lid with the overlapping fabric I cut from the outside edge of the circle every 1" so the fabric would lap over itself and lay flat on the lip of the lid.<br />
Once that was done and the overlap adhering nicely to the lip, I cut around the edge to remove the excess. (You can see the cut off pieces here.) Now the jar lid is fully covered.</span></td></tr>

Here you see the zipper in its sad state: tab disengaged from its teeth.<br />
I pulled and I tugged; I tried using tweezers and all manner of tools to try to get the little dear back on track, literally! But nothing worked. Today I gave up and just took it out. Hated doing it, but there was no way to rectify the problem, but for a do-over.<br />

For now this is as far as the Zipper Project goes, because tonight I was going to the<br />

This goes even beyond local and national levels, as there are etsy local groups all over this planet.<br />
Really, quite amazing.<br />
<br />
This was my first time to attend this gathering.<br />
I had such a wonderful time, met new friends, and came home with crafts that I loved making.</span></span></span></td></tr>

</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"> Now down to the washing details!</div><div style="text-align: center;">When you wash sweaters to be felted you must be sure that you </div><div style="text-align: center;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;">don't ruin your washer</span></i>. </div><div style="text-align: center;">(I have read of more than a few people who have just thrown the sweaters in the wash like their regular laundry load and ended up having to buy a new washer!) This is a very expensive way to have a few nicely felted sweaters...I'm sure you will agree!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">In order not to break the budget, it is imperative that you carefully contain the sweaters you are about to wash. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">Here is my solution:</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">I use a zippered pillowcase and a nylon drawstring bag. However, in spite of both these bags having closed ends, I still tie them tightly with strong twine in spite of their built-in closures. With the great amount of agitation going on during the wash cycle, either the zipper or the drawstring fastener could be easily jarred open. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">The <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Lehigh-Group-530X-Twine-Heavy/dp/B000VYBB0I/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1307329764&sr=8-4"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #7f6000;">TWINE</span></a> :-] is the insurance against purchasing a new washer!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9xHh78LKntc/Tew4suHsxdI/AAAAAAAABIc/L_UBcOtlfcg/s1600/IMG_3455.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9xHh78LKntc/Tew4suHsxdI/AAAAAAAABIc/L_UBcOtlfcg/s320/IMG_3455.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"> My bags of sweaters before putting them in the washer today.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QgJqc4EmTR8/Tew40T9Ef9I/AAAAAAAABIg/BdRrWpo7B6s/s1600/IMG_3456.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QgJqc4EmTR8/Tew40T9Ef9I/AAAAAAAABIg/BdRrWpo7B6s/s320/IMG_3456.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">I wrapped the twine around several times before tying this as tightly as possible. </span></td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4xFh02al6A4/Tew48F9I5OI/AAAAAAAABIk/Au4ls-G5LEE/s1600/IMG_3457.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4xFh02al6A4/Tew48F9I5OI/AAAAAAAABIk/Au4ls-G5LEE/s320/IMG_3457.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Different twine used here, but the same aggressive approach to tying.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">One of the main things about felting is that the sweaters need<br />
HOT wash<br />
&<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Agitation is very important as well.<br />
You can throw in a tennis ball or a flip flop to help the process.<br />
With most newer machines the agitation level can be set.<br />
<br />
The outcome of my Felted Washing Day is that now I have 4 nicely felted sweaters.<br />
Even the Banana Republic sweater with 81% Merino Wool and 19%! NYLON turned out to be wonderfully felted.<br />
